Thanksgiving – Yikes!

Will you be good company? Check out this week's newsletter to read what Libby and I are considering to make sure we are.

Thanksgiving is often a stressful time as families get together. We will have 23 family members from 7 family units at our house next Thursday. Each family represents its own solar system. It will be great fun, but it occurred to me that it might even be better if Libby and I answered the prompt above. Just posing the question assumes that we want to be good company.

We quickly came up with a short list:

  1. Check our expectations. I’m sure that we have plenty of unconscious expectations, like how long people will stay, what we will be able to do together. And other things. An unconscious, unreasonable, unspoken and un-agreed upon expectation is a planned irritation and disappointment. (Pete Scazzero, author)

  2. Get as much done beforehand, including decisions, set-up and the like.

  3. Be flexible. Roll with it. Imagine white-water rafting.

  4. Reject our self-imposed pressure to make sure everyone is having a great time. Relax and have our own great time.

  5. Disable our social fire alarm. No emergencies from others.

  6. Breathe deeply - often.

  7. Laugh a lot.
